Extra Credit
Have you done your best to complete regular work but want a little assistance to raise your grade? Here are some possible extra credit projects you can complete to help your grade.
Please note: Extra Credit will not "save" a student from failing when the student has failed to put in proper effort throughout the school year. Extra Credit is designed to assist students who want a little extra help in raising their scores for a quarter. If a student fails to prepare and study properly throughout the school year, his grades will reflect his lack of dedication to his studies.
Students who genuinely struggle with the work will need assistance and tutoring in order to better understand concepts taught in the classroom. Some students will need to spend more time studying than other students and it is the students' responsibility to prepare for assessments and class discussions.
Semester Portfolio
Students may choose to do a portfolio for the first or second semester. Requirements must be met in order for the portfolio to be accepted. The semester counts as one test grade added to the second and fourth quarter grades.
Students should work to keep their portfolios organized and neat throughout the semester so they are not missing papers or trying to "throw" their portfolios together at the last minute.
Very organized portfolios that contain all work from the semester will receive full extra credit.
Sloppy portfolios will not receive full credit, if any. Sloppy portfolios that lack sufficient material will receive no credit.
Improper portfolios (portfolios that do not meet requirements) will receive no credit.
Word of the Month Poem
Students may write their own poems using the word of the month chosen by Mrs. Jensen. All students may create an original poem and submit to the teacher no later than the last day of each month. Original poems submitted on time and approved by Mrs. Jensen will receive one quiz grade credit for each month a poem is submitted. Because students have plenty of time to complete the Word of the Month poems, late poems are not accepted, even in the case of excused absences.
Class Participation
Students who actively participate in class discussions and are properly prepared for class may receive extra credit towards their quarter grades. Students will be rewarded this credit based upon the teacher's discretion and in the instance that active participation is noted by the teacher on a regular basis. In order to actively participate in class discussions, students will need to prepare by doing their homework and classwork, answer questions in class, volunteer in class to work sentences on the board, or demonstrate in other areas an active participation in our studies. The amount of credit is given at the teacher's discretion.

- Binder -- Portfolios must be secured in a 3-ring binder. The binder should be big enough to properly secure all papers. A 2-inch binder should be sufficient.
- Dividers -- Portfolios must be divided properly with proper dividers. Students may choose to create dividers with colored papers, but proper labeling should be utilized. Divided sections should consist of Notes & Worksheets, Homework, Quizzes & Tests, and Essays.
- Organization -- Portfolios should be organized by placing all papers in the appropriate sections of the binder. Sections should be organized according to dates (either oldest to newest or newest to oldest is fine).
- Neatness -- Portfolios should be neat and not contain any papers that are falling out. All papers must be secured in the binder and be as neat as possible.
- Content -- Portfolios should contain all papers for the semester.
